In all my years in healthcare, I have never quite understood why some illnesses are ones people easily chat about as if they were discussing the weather, while others are hidden from public view.
Those who struggle with the physical, emotional and social consequences of eating disorders are battling a serious illness just as those suffering from cancer or cardiac disease are.
As the author of this article learned in a tragic way, eating disorders are no joke. By sharing her experience, she helps to educate all those who suffer from this disease, their families and friends and the broader community.
We all share a responsibility to learn more about mental health issues and be open to acknowledging when we need help and being open to supporting others struggling with these diseases.
